An important briefing and urgent update regarding a disturbing incident that took place on Saturday during the Saint John Multicultural Festival—an incident that underscores the need for immediate action and accountability.
The incident began when a group of peaceful activists staged a symbolic protest. Some represented kidnapped Palestinian civilians, while others portrayed members of the Israeli Occupation Forces (commonly known as IDF). As the protest moved through the festival, the group approached the Zionist community booth—set up as part of the festival—and kneeled in front of it, chanting against the ongoing genocide in Gaza.
The Zionists at the booth responded with physical aggression, attempting to poke a protester's eye and forcibly remove their mask. Rather than addressing the violent reaction from the booth, festival organizers and Zionist representatives called the police. Without any prior warning or notice, police officers violently arrested two protesters, effectively kidnapping one without informing them they were under arrest. This was not policing—it was intimidation and brutality.
This shocking scene unfolded at what is supposed to be a safe, inclusive, multicultural celebration. We cannot remain silent as a group representing a genocidal state is granted a free platform to whitewash war crimes, while peaceful voices of conscience are criminalized.
This is in Saint John, So, We urge all of you to take a few moments to send a respectful but firm email to the organizers of the Multicultural Festival and the leadership of the Saint John Newcomers Centre.
Suggested points to include in your message:
- Express concern that the festival gave space to a group representing a state responsible for genocide, ethnic cleansing, and mass starvation in Gaza.
- Point out that the presence of this group disrupted Day 1, while Day 2 was peaceful and well-received—because they were not there.
- Share your discomfort about how police presence was increased on Day 2, with the same officers who arrested protesters patrolling the festival. This made many people feel unsafe, especially those from communities who have fled police violence and state oppression in their own countries.
- Emphasize that this festival should celebrate inclusion and humanity—not be used as a platform to whitewash crimes against humanity.
